About NIOS

The National Institute of Open Schooling abbreviated as NIOS was set up to cater to the needs of a mixed group of learners up to pre-degree level. The Open School was started in 1979 as a project with in-built flexibilities by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). It was established by the Government of India, Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) in 1989. NIOS imparts education through Open and Distance Learning (ODL) mode through an amalgamation of self-instructional print material, audio and video programme supported by Personal Contact Programme (PCP) at the Accredited Institutions. These are further supplemented by Radio broadcast, TV programmes and Mukta Vidya Vani (audio streaming through the NIOS website).
NIOS admissions to the secondary and senior secondary levels are conducted twice a year. NIOS has released the NIOS Date Sheet for classes 10th and 12th for the March-April examinations on its official website.

NIOS provides opportunities to interested learners by making available the following Courses/Programmes of Study through open and distance learning (ODL) mode. It is one of the largest open schooling systems in the world with a cumulative enrollment of 2-81 million candidates in past 5 years. Since 1991, approximately 3.52 million learners have been certified in the Secondary, Senior Secondary and Vocations education programmes.

The mission of NIOS is to provide education to allow opportunities to the candidates who wish to study further and qualify for a better tomorrow. NIOS has also taken special initiative to impart education to jail inmates by setting up study centres across the country.

NIOS stands for National Institute of Open Schooling.  NIOS offers students flexibility in terms of their educational pursuits –if someone has dropped off regular studies for some reasons, they can continue their education via Open Schooling. Students from any background and any region of the country can continue their education with this board. Open schooling allows one to take direct examinations in Class X provided one has a basic elementary education or class XII provided they have passed a Class X examination or the equivalent of the same. NIOS provides learning material for students aimed to help them self-study.

To be eligible to be admitted to Class X, candidates need to have an attested certificate of having passed class VIII.

To be eligible to be admitted to Class XII, candidates need to have passed the secondary exam, i.e., standard X examination.

NIOS has started Open Basic Education courses in keeping up with the spirit of Education for All. The program is divided into the following groups, based on age differences:

  • Those with age less than 14 years
  • Those with age more than 14 years
